Consumer Driven IT Gets Serious

Earlier this month we hosted a 25-city seminar event titled “Consumer Driven IT: Thriving in the New Normal” which was attended by over 500 IT managers and executives.  The event included interactive polling, which inspired me to study the poll results and see what they reveal about the current state of IT consumerization.  Because the poll results distinguished respondents by their job roles, I was able to draw contrasts between the entire IT audience responses versus IT executive managers, as well as compare some responses to a survey we conducted previously.

Adoption is accelerating

Last year we worked with IDC to survey 800+ IT Managers and Executives, and we asked them to characterize their organization’s approach to the adoption of IT consumerization. In that survey, 19% indicated that they were being “proactive”. This year, in the poll results from our event, that figure had risen to 24% overall, and 27% for IT Exec Management.

In addition, the percent of IT Exec Management saying that IT consumerization was being led by the business with no involvement by IT has dropped from 15% to 10%. 

Executives still want to see an ROI

When asked what their top challenge was in effective use of consumer technologies, not surprisingly the top concern was security (30%), but #2 was the need to develop a solid ROI/business case (24%).  And when looking at the poll responses from IT Exec Management, the #1 issue was ROI at 32%, even higher than security at 29%.

IT is supremely confident they can deliver

Despite a number of challenges, 82% of our IT respondents said they were confident in their ability to meet customer and end user expectations, and this was consistent across all job positions.

Consumerization is impacting business strategy, but more opportunities still exist

Our last polling question asked whether the use of cloud services and other consumer technologies was driving change in overall business strategy.  50% of all respondents said yes, although this figure dropped to 44% for IT Exec Management, who may be a bit more realistic. So there are still a sizable number of organizations who may be in the early stage of adoption with untapped opportunity for future business leverage.

Overall, I think it is safe to say that not only has IT consumerization come of age, it has become well-entrenched in the world of enterprise IT and subject to the same rigors of ROI and other metrics as any other major IT initiative.
