Kicking off the day was the opening keynote by Andy Jassy, SVP of AWS, complete with cameos by major companies including Netflix, NASA, Nasdaq, and SAP. Each had amazing stories about their success in the cloud. As Andy reminded us, they [Amazon] have seen “every imaginable use case in the cloud.” Although I am somewhat skeptical – I have the feeling that as the cloud continues to grow and evolve, we are only scratching the surface of what it can do. I believe there are many unimagined use cases out there.
In addition, Amazon made a few major announcements during the keynote that sent the social media channels buzzing. One was their 25% decrease in storage (Amazon S3) costs across the board (a point that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings thanked multiple times during his on-stage interview). And the introduction of Amazon’s new data warehousing service, RedShift.
So needless to say, the keynote set the tone for the rest of the day, and perhaps the entire show, creating even more excitement than was already present. Immediately following the keynote, there were a host of sessions covering major cloud trends, tips and tricks, and lessons learned. One session in particular covered tips for making the business case for cloud. Top tips included:
- Measure your Return on Agility (ROA);
- Defragment the fragmented world of mobile/video with the cloud; and
- Move the “no-brainer” workloads first.
Although, guest speaker McGraw Hill Education pointed out that they took a more aggressive approach to cloud — migrating the most mission-critical customer applications first — and they’re seeing significant benefits as a result.
Later in the afternoon, there was a session hosted by NASA that was so popular there was a line around the corner to get in. NASA is doing some very innovative work in the cloud and organizations can learn a lot from what they have been able to accomplish. Not only were they able to land on Mars, they were able to leverage the cloud to instantaneously deliver live pictures and coverage from the journey. An epic day indeed!
