For one hour on Saturday, March 31, from 8.30 p.m.-9.30 p.m. local time, darkness will descend over the world. From Sydney to Sao Paulo; Los Angeles to London, office buildings, homes, sports arenas, and government facilities will all go dark for Earth Hour.Earth hour photo smaller

Organized by the World Wildlife Fund, the first Earth Hour was held in 2007 in Sydney, Australia to take a stand against climate change. That year 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour. The next year they intended to expand it to all of Australia, but it went viral. Earth Hour has grown every year – last year, more than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights — including several CA Technologies locations. And now it is the single largest act of global unity in support of the environment. Check out the official YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FovYv8vf5_E

This event is right in line with our sustainability efforts and over the last few years, we have found that as the event grows, so does the enthusiasm, pride and participation of our employees. Although the timing was not quite right for us this year, we’re still celebrating as a company and taking part in our own way. So due to our fiscal year end close falling on the same day, we’ll acknowledge Earth Hour on Sunday, April 1, when we turn off the lights at offices around the world between 8:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

I’d also like to encourage everyone to get in on it this Saturday with the rest of the planet, if you can. Here are some ideas of activities you can do at home to get involved:

  • Have dinner by candlelight — One year I had a dinner party and we intended to spend that hour dining by candlelight. As the time approached we strategically placed the candles around the table, shut off the background music and stashed a flashlight within arm’s reach. The next time anyone looked at their watch it was well past 9.00. We decided to light a few more candles and keep the lights off for the remainder of the evening. It was one of the most memorable dinner parties I’ve had.

  • Spend some quality time with your family — Spend some time with your family and reminisce about the “old days” before blackberry’s, iPhone and iPads!

  • Tell scary stories to the kids — There’s nothing like telling spooky stories in the dark!

  • Have a neighborhood potluck — This is a great way to meet your neighbors and create community spirit.

So remember join in Earth Hour on Saturday and have some fun with it!
